Seriously Declining Trends in Migratory Waterbirds
Causes - Concerns - Consequences
Proceedings of the International Workshop in Wilhelmshaven, 31 August 2006.

Since the beginning of the eighties, water birds have been monitored in the entire Wadden Sea, in a close spatial and temporal pattern, mostly by hundreds of voluntary counters. The evaluation of the data gathered in the period from 1980 to 2000, in the framework of the TMAP had alerted the scientists and was the cause for the workshop held in Wilhelmshaven.

Breeding Birds in the Wadden Sea in 2001
Results of the total survey in 2001 and trends in numbers between 1991 - 2001
The report includes the results of the 2001 total survey and the comparisons to the first and second surveys, ten respectively five years ago. This report reflects the fact that the joint breeding birds monitoring program has been operational for a long period of time, allowing for the analysis of long-time series.

Migratory Waterbirds in the Wadden Sea 1980-2000

The present report entails four contributions. In the first and main one, the JMMB gives an overview of numbers and trends 1980 - 2000 for all 34 species of the JMMB-program. Regarding selected species respectively species groups - such as Barnacle Geese and Dark-bellied Brent Geese, Curlews as well as shellfish-eating birds - specific aspects related to habitat use, hunting and mussel and cockle fishery are discussed in more detail by different authors in the following three additional contributions of the issue.

Contaminants in Birds Eggs

The reports consist of two articles:
"Contaminants in Bird Eggs - Recent spatial and temporal trends" which is an update of the 2001 report and
"Seabirds at Risk? Effects of Environmental Chemicals and Reproductive Success and Mass Growth of Seabirds Breeding in the Wadden Sea in the mid 1990s"

Contaminants in Birds Eggs 1991 - 2000

The report "Contaminants in Bird Eggs in the Wadden Sea" analyzed the spatial and temporal trends of mercury and selected organochlorines (PCBs, DDTs, HCHs, HCB, chlordanes) in bird eggs at 13 sites in the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark for the period 1991 - 2000.

Wadden Sea Specific Eutrophication Criteria

The report, published in 2001, presented the results of a literature study and data analysis aiming at developing Wadden Sea specific eutrophication criteria. The study was necessary to specify the trilateral Ecological Target "to achieve a Wadden Sea which can be regarded as a eutrophication Non-Problem Area", (Ministerial Conference, Leeuwarden  NL, 1994). The work was done in close cooperation with activities in the framework of the OSPAR Common Procedure.

Breeding Birds in the Wadden Sea

The report "Breeding Birds in the Wadden Sea in 1996" published in 2000, entails the result of a total survey in 1996 and of numbers of colony breeding species between 1991 and 1996
Printed copies are not available any more; the full report can be downloaded.

  2. Quality Status Reports (QSR)

2004 Quality Status Report

The "Wadden Sea Quality Status Report 2004" is an update of the 1999 QSR and gives a comprehensive overview of the ecosystem and the impact of human activities (360 pages).
A printed copy is available on request (10 EUR + mailing costs).

1999 Quality Status Report

The "Wadden Sea Quality Status Report 1999" entails a comprehensive, integrated assessment of the Wadden Sea ecosystem and the impact of human activities (259 pages). It reflects the main important political decisions within the trilateral cooperation, most notably the adoption of a common delimitation of the Wadden Sea Area, of common Targets for the different WaddenSea habitats and of a common management plan, the Trilateral Wadden Sea.
A printed copy is available on request (10 EUR + mailing costs).

1997 Assessment Report

The "Assessment of the Wadden Sea Ecosystem" (40 pages) has been drafted on the occasion of the 8th Trilateral Governmental Wadden Sea Conference in Stade, Germany, 22 October 1997.

1993 Quality Status Report

The Quality Status Report (QSR) of the Wadden Sea has been elaborated as one of the regional reports for the QSR of the North Sea in 1993 (174 pages, not available any more).

The main conclusions of the QSR 1993 are given in the Assessment Report to the 7th Trilateral Governmental Conference in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands, in November 1994.
