The landscape has always been in transformation. Nowadays changes are going more rapidly because of current agricultural practices, urbanization and industrialization. The three Wadden Sea countries have therefore jointly agreed to give high priority to the landscape and cultural heritage of the Wadden Sea Region. 

But in order to protect and develop the heritage, one must know what the heritage consists of. For this purpose the three countries have initiated a joint cross-boundary project, LANCEWAD (Landscape and Cultural Heritage of the Wadden Sea Region), co-financed by the EU North Sea Programme.
