The ‘Programma Rijke Waddenzee’ and the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat (CWSS) commissioned an inventory study into policy and research concerning neobiota in the international Wadden Sea. The aim was to collect state of the art information on the following five topics related to introductions of alien species in the international Wadden Sea:
  • Ballast Water,
  • Aquaculture,
  • Biofouling,
  • Wadden Sea Islands,
  • Secondary introductions through natural routes of dispersal.

For each of these topics (developments in) policies and legal aspects, as well as monitoring and research programmes were addressed and main gaps and recommendations identified.
The report will serve as a starting point for the development of a common trilateral strategy on invasive alien species, as decided at the 11th Trilateral Governmental Wadden Sea Conference (Sylt, Germany March 2011).
