Hamburg application for World Heritage

28.01.2011 On January 28, 2011 the application for the inclusion of the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park into the Dutch-German Wadden Sea World Heritage property was submitted to the World Heritage Center in Paris by the German ambassador to the UNESCO.  >> More
Hamburg signed World Heritage Nomination
20.12.2010 The lord mayor of Hamburg Mr. Christoph Ahlhaus (photo) signed the request to incorporate the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park into the Wadden Sea World Heritage property. The request will also be signed by Federal Environment Minister, Dr. Norbert Röttgen and be submitted to the UNESCO World Heritage Center in Paris in January 2011. >> Press release
1st Transnational Call for Proposals on Wadden Sea Research signed in Leeuwarden
10.12.2010 During the scientific symposium in Leeuwarden (see below), the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) have signed the first transnational call for Wadden Sea Research with a volume of 2 Million Euro. 20th Anniversary Seal Agreement
15.10.2010 On 16th October 1990, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands signed the first regional Agreement under the Bonn Convention. Since then, the seal population has increased considerably -  a true success story of the Trilateral Cooperation. >> More

5th  Wadden Sea Day "Neobiota in the Wadden Sea -  Challenges for Nature Conservation"
27.08.2010 Over 110 experts discussed status and recent research and management projects, possible threat to the World Heritage and how to deal with it trilaterally. The 5th Wadden Sea Day was jointly organized by the National Park Administration Lower Saxon Wadden Sea and the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat. >>More

Trends of Breeding Birds in the Wadden Sea
11.05.2010 For the first time the Joint Monitoring of Breeding Birds (JMBB) Group is presenting the annual trend analyses of breeding birds based on trilateral count data up to 2006.
Although 8 species are showing an increasing trend, 10 species are having an opposite trend.

New Trends of Migratory Waterbirds in the Wadden Sea
15.04.2010 The Joint Monitoring of Migratory Birds (JMMB) Group has updated the annual trend analyses of migratory birds based on trilateral count data from 1987/88 until 2007/2008. For each of the 34 waterbirds, 10 and 21-year trends have been calculated for the entire Wadden Sea and four subregions.  >>More
Exploring Contrasting Trends of Migratory Waterbirds in the Wadden Sea
14.04.2010 A high number of waterbirds show declining trends in the Wadden Sea. While some species show a similar trend in all Wadden Sea countries, a sizable number of bird species shows different trends in different Wadden Sea countries. It is these contrasting trends that are the focus of this exploratory study.

15.03.2010 In the course of 2009, the Dutch Wadden Academy has established contacts with German and Danish scientists, with the aim of reinforcing scientific co-operation across boundaries in the Wadden Sea Region, and to establish a common international research agenda.
The brochure documents the result of intensive discussions between the Dutch Wadden Academy, the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat and 24 German and Danish institutions in Hamburg in 2009.
Wadden Sea Quality Status Report 2009
17.12.2009 The Quality Status Report 2009 (QSR 2009) was prepared to update the findings of the QSR 2004 and to provide input into the Trilateral Governmental Conference on Sylt on 18 March 2010. Over 115 scientists from the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark have contributed to this project during 2008-2009 and prepared 30 thematic reports. >>More

Wonderful! The Wadden Sea makes the World Heritage List

26 June 2009 The Dutch-German Wadden Sea is now on the same footing as other world famous natural wonders on the World Heritage List like the Grand Canyon in the USA and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. On 26 June 2009, the Wadden Sea has been inscribed on the List by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee at its meeting in Seville. >>More

The 12th International Scientific Wadden Sea Symposium (Wilhelmshaven, 30 March – 3 April 2009) focused on how research and monitoring can provide input to conservation and management, by developing new methods and assessment tools, especially with regard to the implementation of the EU Directives including the new Marine Strategy Framework Directive.  >> More

Successful and indicatory goose management workshop (18.12.2008) Geese
On 19 - 20 November 2008, an international workshop on goose management was held in Ribe. The workshop, organized jointly by the Environment Centre Ribe, the Wadden Sea Forum and the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat was attended by some 30 representatives from science, agriculture, nature conservation societies and responsible authorities. A broad consensus was reached on a long-term international approach how to deal with geese populations, which are part of the Wadden Sea environment. Refuge areas and agri-environmental schemes were considered as valuable tools and policies of successful goose management. . >>More
Mapping subtidal habitats (17.12.2008)  
In preparation of the Wadden Sea Quality Status Report 2009, the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat (CWSS), the GKSS Research Center and the ENCORA network organized a trilateral workshop on mapping of subtidal habitats on 16 December 2008. The workshop was attended by 30 experts from research institutions and administrations from the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark.   >>More
Number of Harbour Seals has increased (25.11.2008)

The total number of 20,250 harbour seals counted in 2008 is the highest number ever counted in the Wadden Sea during the moult. It indicates that the population is still growing prosperously and has evidently passed its pre 2002-epizootic level of 17,700 animals. >>More
The Wadden Sea at the Ramsar Conference in Korea (6.11.2008)

An international symposium on intertidal wetlands was held on 27 October as a supporting event of the 10th Ramsar Conference in Korea with the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat as co-organizer.
The symposium underlined that very little of the Yellow Sea intertidal wetlands is protected sufficiently, and none of it on an ecosystem scale, as done in the Wadden Sea. The conclusions from symposium were included as an Annex to the Ramsar Waterbird Flyway Resolution (Resolution No. 22).

World Heritage Field Mission Successful  (18.9.2008)
The field mission for the evaluation of the Dutch-German Wadden Sea World Heritage Nomination was carried out from 1 to 11 September 2008 by Mr Pedro Rosabal (IUCN). He met more than 100 representing governments, regional and local authorities, scientific institutions, advisory boards, non-governmental organizations and private stakeholders. Federal Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel, the Dutch Agriculture Minister Gerda Verburg and the Danish Environment Minister Troels Lund Poulsen signed a Letter of Intent to further improve protection of the Wadden Sea on the margins of the 9th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the CBD in Bon. “The trilateral cooperation on protecting the Wadden Sea is a success story and a model example of transboundary conservation of biological diversity”, noted Federal Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel. >Press Info English / Pressemitteilung Deutsch/Speeches Minister Gabriel / Minister Verburg

23 January 2008 The total number of about 17,600 harbour seals observed in the Wadden Sea in 2007 indicates that the population has returned to its pre 2002-epizootic level of 17,900 animals. This is one year earlier than predicted. >>More
18 January 2008 The Danish Parliament decided yesterday (17.1.08) to designate the Danish Wadden Sea including the islands and adjacent marsh areas as a National Park. The procedure for the designation as stipulated in the Act on National Parks will commence in spring 2009. Download map of the area to be designated as the Danish Wadden Sea National Park

24 August 2007 The seal epidemic is still present in the Kattegat but the tested samples were proved negative for PDV. No unusual mortality has been reported from the Wadden Sea.

12 July 2007 10 dead habour seals with PDV symptoms were found in the southern part of the Swedish Kattegat coast south of Halmstad. Read more
6 July 2007 33 dead harbour seals were found on the small island of Hesselø, Kattegat, on 4 July 2007. There is hence a risk that the so-called seal plague has spread from Anholt, where 60 dead harbour seals, which died from the disease, have been found within the last 14 days. Read more
26 June 2007 in June 2007, the external experts Mike Moser and Andy Brown presented an evaluation of the Trilateral Wadden Sea Cooperation  and prepared recommendations to optimize it for future needs. Read more.

25 May 2007 A trilateral workshop on Wadden Sea and Climate Change will be organized on 30 August 2007 in Wilhelmshaven to discuss the requirements to research and monitoring as a basis for adaptive ecosystem management. Program and Registration (deadline 15 August)
2 May 2007 The trilateral report on "Spread of the Pacific Oyster in the Wadden Sea" (by Georg Nehls and Heike Büttger) including the conclusions and recommendations from the trilateral workshop is now available for download here.
21 February 2007 A trilateral workshop on the Invasion of the Pacific Oyster in the Wadden Sea will take place on 22 March 2007 in Wilhelmshaven and will address consequences for ecology, monitoring and management.
