Some years ago, contributions about other important
nature areas, such as the Great Arctic Reserve (WSNL 1991 -
No. 1) and The Wash/North Norfolk Coast (WSNL 1993 - No. 1),
have been published in the WSNL. In this issue, this type of
articles is being continued with the presentation on the
elaboration of a management plan called "Strategic Plan" for
the World Heritage Area "Great Barrier Reef" in Australia.
Tim Cansfield-Smith, who also gave a lecture at the last
International Scientific Wadden Sea Symposium on Norderney
in Germany (see Recommendations in this WSNL-issue),
introduces, impressively how all user and interest groups -
called stakeholders - can be involved in the decision making
process.
Involvements of stakeholders and co-management are new
key-elements for the future and will surely be taken into
account within the Ministerial Declaration of the next
Trilateral Wadden Sea Conference. This important event will
take place in Stade, Germany, on October 22, 1997. The main
discussion items at the conference will be, among others,
the draft Management Plan for the Wadden Sea and the further
implementation of the Trilateral Monitoring and Assessment
Program, TMAP.

Management aspects regarding salt marshes in the Wadden
Sea countries and mussel fishery are being dealt with in
several contributions in this WSNL-issue. An overview on the
status of the implementation of the TMAP is given by the
trilateral monitoring and the data handling coordinators,
and, in more detail, developments regarding the parameters
"Breeding Success" and "Seals" are presented.
Since November '96 the CWSS has a website:

on the internet.
