Organization

Since 1978, the responsible ministries of the The Netherlands, Denmark and Germany have been working together on the protection and conservation of the Wadden Sea covering management, monitoring and research, as well as political matters:

Trilateral Wadden Sea Governmental Council is the politically responsible body (Ministers) for the Cooperation. It gives political leadership, assures international policy development, harmonisation and decision-making between the three governments.

Wadden Sea Board is the governing body of the Cooperation. Prepares, adopts and implements the Strategy, oversees the operational and advisory bodies, and secures relations with key stakeholders. The Board is chaired by a senior government official appointed by the Council and rotating between the countries and operates according to agreed Rules of Procedure.

The Common Wadden Sea Secretariat (CWSS) was established in 1987 in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, as the secretariat for the trilateral cooperation. Its primary task is to support, initiate, facilitate and coordinate the activities of the collaboration.
