In 1987, the Common Wadden
Sea Secretariat (CWSS) was established as the secretariat for
the trilateral Cooperation. Since then, it has been situated
in Wilhelmshaven, Germany. Its primary task is to support, initiate,
facilitate and coordinate the activities of the collaboration. In 2007, the secretariat celebrated
its 20th Anniversary.
The CWSS is responsible for the preparation of the meetings held
in the framework of the cooperation. It is also responsible for
the collection and assessment of information with regard to Wadden
Sea protection, management and monitoring including progress
in the implementation of the decisions of the ministerial conferences.
Furthermore the CWSS collects information on activities that have, or
may have, significant effects on the natural environment of the
Wadden Sea and give suggestions for appropriate actions. Finally,
the secretariat coordinates trilateral initiatives in relevant
international organizations
(Administrative
Agreement (English) (Deutsch)).
Reports and documents produced by the trilateral cooperation are
published by the CWSS.
The work of the secretariat is supervised by a board of representatives
composed of one representative of each of the responsible national
ministries.
